These graphite drawings function as graphic antennas and explore the qualities and inherent nature of a combination of hand-drawn and mathematically generated forms. Delving into algorithmic structures, fractals and the chaotic nature of the hand drawn line, these drawings are an exploration of conductive materials and the possibilities for drawing electronic components. When connected …

It engages with the possibilities for evidencing the local energetic environment through gold and graphite graphic interpretations of mathematical algorithms that behave like antennas. This work expands the conceptual limits of representation by activating the functional properties in the image both as a material entity and a form. It opens up possibilities for working with images …

EarthStar’s overall effect is a poetically charged experience that ultimately emphasises the sun’s elemental and mythic qualities. Exploring arcane energies and hidden frequencies, the installation comprises three elements; a formal dynamic space is established between the singular and spectacular footage of the solar chromo-sphere captured by the Artists using a Hydrogen-Alpha telescope, sitting in opposition to this are two luminous refrigeration units containing virtual aroma compositions of synthesised molecules that represent states of ozone. Building a bridge between these two elements is a resonating and receiving system of VLF antennae tuned to the radio bursts emitted by the sun and …
Telepathy 2008, Performance Space. Telepathy 2016 MCA Sydney, Telepathy Muttuma 2021-Ongoing, Telepathy Guggenheim Gallery, Chapman University, Orange County, California, USA 2024 Telepathy (2008) was an installation commission by the collaborative team of David Haines and Joyce Hinterding. The commissioning process was initiated by Performance Space’s former Associate Director, Sally Breen, as part of a suite of new works by NSW-based artists, made specifically for the cavernous CarriageWorks environment and in relation to its history, former uses and present-day conversion. Haines and Hinterding responded to the visually layered, light-filled, busy and echoic building by considering a space for darkness, silence …
Superlight 01SJ Biennial – The San Jose Museum of Art, Superlight HD Video projection, Live sound, graphic antenna. David Haines and Joyce Hinterding present a vivid cinematic sequence of a failed oil mining ghost town in the Australian outback coupled with the ghostly audio of the electromagnetic soundscape from the artist’s field recordings. The artists also present some of the unusual sculptures they have made to detect and listen to the normally unheard world of the electromagnetic in the museum in real-time. The installation is part of an esoteric laboratory for ghost-busting and part metaphorical commentary on the speed of …
CORE (Cosmic Orgone Engineering) was an exhibition produced as part of a residency we did at IASKA International Art Space Kellaberrin, Western Australia 2007. RULES TO FOLLOW IN CLOUD ENGINEERING by Wilhelm Reich Published by Orgone Institute in “CORE” July 1954 Vol. VI Nos. 1-4; appendix A” 1. Shed all ambition to impress anyone. 2. Never play around with rain making or cloudbusting. The OR envelope which you tackle while “drawing” energy from the atmosphere is an energetic continuum of high power. You may cause twisters. You may stir a forest fire into the wrong direction. You may do …

Hollow Earth Theory is nothing new in the history of ideas. The famous British seventeenth century astronomer, Edmund Haley believed that the inner earth was hollow and lit by a luminous atmosphere. Edgar Rice Burroughs wrote a cycle of novels set in the hollow earth. Julese Verne wrote ‘Journey to the Center of the Earth’ as part of a series of journey novels. John Cleves Symmes, an American nineteenth century eccentric believed that the earth was open at the poles and that the interior of the earth was inhabited. In 1906, William Reed added his book “Phantom of the Poles” …

2002 – Converge: Where art and Science meet: The Adelaide Biennial, The Art Gallery of South Australia, 2002 -The 13th Sydney Biennale of Sydney, The world (May Be) Fantastic, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney, Australia. The Plasma Wave Instrument explores the in-between space of matter both as a real-world phenomenon and as an imaginary rendering via a computer-generated sequence. At the centre of this work is a photovoltaic high-voltage generator that transforms sunlight into plasma. Here, the air in its fourth phase travels faster than the speed of sound, literally burning the air. The mechanism that facilitates this is based …
Australian artists Joyce Hinterding and David Haines usually pursue separate artistic practices. Recently they have produced two intriguing video installations collaboratively. The Levitation Grounds (2000) and, in this exhibition, The Blinds and the Shutters. Joyce Hinterdings work focuses on a form of installation concerned with energy and sound. At the heart of her work is the exploration of the seemingly invisible phenomena that pervade our daily existence: electricity, the sounds of weather or electro-magnetic fields. Consistent throughout her oeuvre has been the desire to make the invisible visible. In the past she has created lightning on the roof of a …

LEVITATION GROUNDS by Liminal Product: Fran Dyson & Douglas Kahn We would like to believe that we belong to the place where weather places us. No matter how people might isolate themselves among concrete, glass, metal and media, they are brought back into a communal experience once immersed in searing heat, syrupy humidity, dense fog, or bone-chilling wind. It influences what we talk about, how we dress, how we move about, whether we move about, where we go and where we are. Can not a particular clime leach into the deep character structures of an entire people, just as it …

All conventional electronic components except the transistor and a piezo speakers have been replaced by the graphite drawings, connecting wires and silver leaf. The recording of this installation titled “the Oscillators” and …
